There are dozens of companies and dealers which deal with CCTV cameras, biometric devices, fire alarm systems, EPABX systems, etc at all levels. In a busy marketplace you can find several of them working from small setups or offices. All of them may not have the time, expertise or budget to build and operate their own website. And even if some of them do have their own website they find it hard to make it discoverable through search engines or other sources. ...READ MORE

CCTV

CCTV or Close Circuit Television is a gadget that shoots videos of a premises that needs constant vigilance. It can be an office space, residential space, retail space, airports, banks, schools, hospitals, hotels, traffic signals and any other place of importance. In the recent times a lot of money is being spent on buying and installing CCTV in large and small cities. Huge funds are being allocated and several CCTV dealers are invited to submit tenders for installing CCTVs. We have seen it appear in the 2018-19 budget of Delhi as well as the central government. This leaves us wondering why there is such a sudden interest in CCTVs. CCTV has several benefits, some of which are discussed as below.

Crime Prevention

When a criminal or wrongdoer is aware that the area is being watched by a CCTV, they tend to avoid doing the crime. CCTV has proven to reduce a lot of crime in foreign countries where CCTVs are more common. Crimes like theft, burglary, even kidnapping and murder can be avoided with proper video surveillance system in place.

Crime Detection

When a crime has been committed, CCTV helps in identification of the criminal. CCTV footage is also put forward as evidence in court while prosecuting a criminal.

Traffic monitoring

Video surveillance is used in traffic monitoring on busy roads and crossroads. It helps to detect which vehicles have violated traffic rules and based on these evidences it puts fine on the owner of the vehicle. Such cameras have the advanced facility of Number Plate Recognition.

Patient and jailed criminal monitoring

CCTV helps to monitor dangerous medical patients such as those in a mental hospital as well as imprisoned inmates of jails.

Overseeing hazardous places

CCTV are used in monitoring toxic industrial places or radioactive areas where humans cannot be there in person.

Employee monitoring

Video surveillance is used in offices and business places to watch over employees. When the employees are aware that CCTV is monitoring them, they become more conscious of their own activities and work more efficiently. CCTV in workplace also reduces employee theft of office belongings.

Public places

Public places like banks, ATMs, schools, colleges, airports, railway stations, etc have CCTV installed to monitor the behavior of the people in the area to avoid or detect unwanted incidents. CCTV have several components that needs to be installed to be able to monitor and record video footage. They are as follows:

CCTV Camera

This is the most vital component of the CCTV installation. It consists of the lens, image sensor, casing and the mounting. Depending on the type of the camera these will vary. The lens can be fixed or varifocal. The casing can be dome, bullet, wireless, box, etc. The mounting can be wall mounted or ceiling mounted. It is better to consult with your CCTV dealer as to what type of camera you need.

Security DVR/NVR

The Digital Video Recorder(DVR) or Network Video Recorder(NVR) is the component that processes the videos coming from the cameras and stores in hard drive as well as sends the footage to monitor for live surveillance. The DVR has channels where each camera is connected to its own channel. There can be 1 channel, 2 channel, 4 channel, 8 channel, 16 channel, 32 channel and 64 channel DVRs. There are also hybrid DVRs available that can be connected to analog as well as network cameras.

Hard Disk

This is where the footage is compressed with encoding and stored. Hard Disk can be upto 2 TB but the amount of space consumed depends upon the type of compression and quality of image. When the Hard Disk is full it can be replaced or newer videos are written on top of older videos.

CCTV Cable

CCTV cable connects the cameras with the DVR as well as the DVR to the monitor. These cables can be coax cables used for analog cameras or Ethernet cables (CAT6 cables) for IP cameras. The Ethernet cables can transfer data over a longer distance than coax cables. Often power to the camera is provided by these cables. In case of analog cameras, we use Siamese coax cables to transmit data as well as supply power. For IP cameras, we use the PoE(Power over Ethernet) technology to provide power along with transfer data. For coax cables we also need BNC connectors to terminate the cable into the DVR channel.

Power Supply

This supplies power to the analog CCTV cameras. This is where the power cable of the Siamese coax cable is connected. They come in 24 VAC or 12 VDC configurations with different voltages. Now we will see what are the different types of CCTV cameras available in the market.

1. Dome Camera

This camera got its name from the inverted dome shape of the camera housing. Due to its shape it is difficult to assess which direction the camera is pointing. This makes the people under vigilance aware of the camera and they avoid misbehavior or crime of any sort. Dome camera is most popular among the lot and can be seen in Banks, ATM, retail spaces, schools and colleges, jewelry shops and all other sorts of places. They are often very sturdy with a high IP rating which makes them ideal for monitoring places like kitchen and warehouses where there is a lot of dust and smoke particles.

2. Bullet Camera

Bullet camera are cylindrical in shape similar to the bullet mailboxes standing in the front door. They are known for their picture quality and robust weatherproof design. These cameras can withstand strong rain, storm and snow which makes them ideal for outdoor installation. These can also be found in railway stations, airports, parking lots, etc. The longer body of the cylinder allows lenses with larger focal length to be used with these cameras.

3. PTZ Camera

Pan Tilt Zoom or PTZ cameras have the feature through which the position of the camera can be changed within the camera housing. The camera can be moved upwards or downwards, tilt sideways and zoomed in on a particular area within the field of view. It is much like using the joystick of a game box.

4. Box Camera

The box shaped surveillance cameras are used to produce high resolution pictures. It is a standalone camera with features like other cameras. It can be used for both commercial and residential purposes as long as aesthetics is not an issue. These cameras come with a choice of fixed length and varifocal lens.

5. IP Cameras

IP here stands for Internet Protocol. IP cameras sends captured video digitally through Ethernet cable or wirelessly through a router or modem. IP cameras have high resolution and some of them have advanced video analytics softwares built in.

6. Nightvision Camera

As the name suggests these cameras have the ability to record videos in low-light and in the night time using Infrared radiation coming from IR LEDs. In the low light the image captured is in black and white while during the day the image recorded is colored. These cameras have IR cut filters which automatically switches on and off the IR LEDs based on the surrounding light.

7. Fish Eye Camera or 360 degree Camera

These cameras are usually ball or flat shaped and captures the entire room or space. The image from each point are captured and combined together to form the spherical image. These cameras give a distorted view and is often used as overview cameras.
